What Is View From My Desk?

For a few years, I worked at 199 Water Street in Manhattan. It was a big ol’ building full of some fancy pants companies, and it seemed like every security guard was a retired police officer. It was a good space. Well, I guess it still is, I’m just not in it anymore.

I was never in love with my job (which will come as no surprise to my former coworkers) but I loved the people and the place.

On frustrating days, when people in less nice offices would stare out the window wishing they could just defenestrate their slow computer (or stare at the wall, wishing they had a window to consider throwing something out of), I got to look out at a beautiful view of the East River.

And that made everything better.

Well, almost.

So I started taking photos with my phone, and I began posting them on Instagram using the hashtag #viewfrommydesk. People seemed to like it. Or hate it. But I think most people liked it.

As my job become more accepting of employees working remotely, I started doing that more often. (I will fight to the death about how I am a much better worker if I can be at least partially remote. And I think I’ve proven that.) So eventually the photos branch out from just 199 Water and include views from other offices, from my home, from cafes, etc. Anywhere I set down a laptop and began working on a project.

Work takes on several meanings. It means jobby job work, but also extracurricular project work.

This series is largely old photos from old camera phones (just phones, now, I suppose), though it will be updated with new ones as I work, even though I no longer have an office. Or a boss. Or a job.

But I’ll always have a view from my desk.
